Dr. Anatoly Temkin Graduate Student Advisor 617-353-2566 |
Office Hours: Monday, Tuesday 4pm to 6pm |
I
took a course at another university that sounds similar to a prerequisite
course. What should I do?
E-mail
me, with a brief course description at csadv@bu.edu,
and send in the official transcript.
Do I need an appointment to attend your office hours?
No, an appointment is not necessary. It is a good idea to call the department
the day of the office hours to make sure that nothing unusual has
occurred in my schedule.
Are
you the only advisor?
I am the only advisor for the Master of Science degree programs in Computer
Science, Computer Information Systems, and Telecommunication. I am
also the advisor for our eight certificate programs.
I noticed in the latest brochure that the course number or class titles
are different than my original requirements. Which publication should
I follow?
Call
the department at 617-353-2566 for more information. We are continuously
updating and improving our graduate degree programs to maintain our
high standards and to keep up to date with the latest technologies
and trends.
If am interested in a graduate course that is not listed as a concentration
elective, can I apply it towards my degree?
Contact
me at (617)353-2566 during my office hours, or send an e-mail to csadv@bu.edu
What
is the procedure for registering a graduate course offered through another
college here at BU?
E-mail
me. I want to make sure that that course satisfies degree requirements
for graduation.
Are
the prerequisite courses a part of the degree program?
These courses are not a part of the degree program. They might be
a part of a certificate program such as the undergraduate certificate
in software development, but they are not a formal part of the Master
of Science program. Prerequisites may be taken at another university. Prerequisites can
also be satisfied by taking a waiver examination. Waiver exams are
pass/fail, 3-hour open book. The syllabi are provided by the department
upon request.
How
do I get an application?
Call or e-mail the department to csinfo@bu.edu to request one. We also have our forms available on-line. They can
be found from www.bu.edu/met/programs under the desired program of study.
Do
I need the advisor's signature to register for classes?
If you have been accepted as a Master's Degree candidate, are in good
standing with the university, and are registering for four courses
or less, you do not need an advisor's signature for Fall of Spring
semesters.
If you are not a degree candidate yet, you may register for two courses a semester. However do not take more than two graduate level courses before being admitted into the program.
If you are not a degree candidate yet, you may register for two courses a semester. However do not take more than two graduate level courses before being admitted into the program.
The
web has different courses listed than when I applied to the program. Will
the courses I took still be considered for graduation? (Assuming that
the courses were not taken more than 6 years ago)
Courses
listed when you apply may differ from those offered at a later date.
Courses listed on the web site are subject to change. Courses completed
before the change will count towards graduation requirements. The
Master of Science degree must be completed in six years; courses that
are over six years old have expired. Please contact me if this applies
to you.
Do
I need to talk to the advisor every semester I register for classes?
Our students are busy professionals that are more than capable to manage
their own schedules. We do not require students to meet with an advisor
every semester. I would like to encourage you to ask questions. If
you are unsure how to proceed, please come to see me.
Should
I talk to the advisor before I graduate?
If
you are unsure about your courses, or would like me to go over your
record, please contact me either through e-mail or call during my office hours.
If
I can't make your office hours, what should I do?
Please E-mail me.
I
do not satisfy the prerequisites requirements for admission to the masters
degree program. What should I do first? Can I still apply for the program?
Yes,
you can apply. We will identify the prerequisites courses you need
to complete and accept you into the program contingent upon completeing
these courses.You
can also seek the advice of our graduate student advisor.
Do
I have to take the GREs?
GREs
are not required.
Must
I have a bachelor degree in Computer Science?
No.
You need a bachelor's degree from a accredited institution, but it
does not have to be in Computer Science or related field. We provide
the background material in the form of prerequisites for non- Computer
Science majors. This accelerated process allows you to begin the program
quickly.
Although
I have not taken some or all of the prerequisite courses, I have learned
the material on the job. Can I still waive some or all of the classes?
You
will need to take a prerequisite waiver exam for each prerequisite
course. Waiver exams are pass/fail, open book, and approximately 3
hours in length. Syllabi for these exams are available by calling
617-353-2566 or sending email to csinfo@bu.edu. Each exam has a $50.00
fee and can be taken at your convenience during our normal business
hours. Please make an appointment at least 24 hours in advance for
the waiver exam.
Can
I tailor my study to one or more areas?
Generally,
yes. The programs provide an opportunity to tailor one’s course
of
study to suit particular goals. The computer science degree program
and the computer information systems degree programs have the following
specializations: information security; software engineering; data
communications and networks; database and client/server architecture;
object-oriented design; operating systems; or information systems.
What
is the difference between the computer science and the computer information
systems degrees?
The
computer science degree is for those who seek in-depth technical
knowledge of, and experience with,
computing, programming, and/or systems design. The computer information
systems degree is oriented towards those who use information technology
to solve business or organizational problems, or to those who supervise
such activities.
What
careers are available to those enrolled in the telecommunication degree
programs?
The
program attracts students who are interested in careers that range
from developing internetworking software to marketing newly created
telecommunication services. Students may wish, for example to pursue
a career as a telecommunication manager, network security specialist
systems and network administrator security analyst network designer,
internetworking manager, or telecommunication analyst.
Can
I obtain a degree at a campus other than Boston University’s Charles
Rives Campus?
Yes.
A full curriculum is offered at Boston University’s Tyngsboro
Campus
and Boston’s Financial District Campus.
